Devising with Eric Tucker

Everything old is new again! Bedlam Artistic Director and Founder Eric Tucker will lead participants in working with material from an upcoming Bedlam production. Participants will experience a full rehearsal process, beginning with text analysis; moving through exploration of character, relationships, and environment; and culminating in a piece of theatre that is a new take on a classic text. The intention is to allow participants to experience the collaborative way in which Tucker develops and directs Bedlam productions, calling on their imagination and exercising their physical and vocal instrument as they create characters from some of the greatest classic plays. This class is intended for experienced actors and theatre-makers. Admission is based on resume review.

Shakespeare Deep Dive: Romeo and Juliet with Tom O’Keefe

Get to know a classic from the inside out! Under the guidance of Bedlam founding member Tom O’Keefe, participants in this class will apply Bedlam’s rehearsal techniques to scenes and monologues from Romeo and Juliet. Participants will gain an intimate knowledge of Shakespeare’s play through exploration of text and physicality, deepening their connections to character, story, and relationship. This class is intended for students with prior Shakespeare experience. Admission is based on resume review.

The Instructor’s Professional Highlights:

TOM O’KEEFE – is a founding company member of Bedlam. Favorite Bedlam roles include Claudius in Hamlet; Cauchon and Polly in Saint Joan; Feste, Antonio, and Sebastian in Twelfth Night and What You Will; and Rob McDonald in Dead Dog Park. Tom has also been seen at The Pearl, TFNA, HERE Arts, APAC, Kirk Theater, Pioneer Theater, and Shakespeare & Co. His television credits include: “The Gifted,” “The Tick,” “House of Cards,” “The Path,” “CSI,” “Criminal Minds,” “E.R.”, and “The Shield.” Tom is a regular teacher in Bedlam’s Veteran Outreach program. He’s taught and directed as part of Shakespeare & Company’s Fall Festival of Shakespeare, led workshops for English teachers on the teaching of Shakespeare at Columbia University’s Teachers College and taught Shakespeare and acting to students at Bowdoin College and NYU. Tom trained at Shakespeare & Company and has studied with Patsy Rodenburg, Larry Moss, Gates McFadden, Sal Romeo and Stacey Martino, Karen Maruyama, Sean Hogan, Beth Lapides, Brian Reise, and Bob Krakower. www.tom-okeefe.com.

Acting for the Screen with Zuzanna Szadkowski

Set yourself free! Bedlam regular Zuzanna Szadkowski aims to help participants work more effectively and freely in their own skin, in front of the camera and on stage. Using text from television scripts, screenplays, and contemporary plays, participants will practice communicating easily and naturally, landing thoughts, effecting a change in their partners, and surprising themselves through unrestricted play. In true Bedlam form, this class focuses on the immediacy of connection between actor, material, and audience and requires that the actor re-imagine what’s possible in performing a given text. This class is ideal for students with some acting experience.

ZUZANNA SZADKOWSKI – played Dorota in the CW’s hit drama series “Gossip Girl”. She can be seen as Nurse Pell on the Cinemax series from Steven Soderbergh, “The Knick.” Other television credits include: “Search Party,” “The Good Wife,” “Elementary,” “Girls,” “Guiding Light,” “The Sopranos,” “Law and Order,” and “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.” Film credits include Pigeon, Growing up and Other Lies, Loserville and Butterflies of Bill Baker. Off-Broadway theater credits include queens at LCT3, Uncle Romeo Vanya Juliet (WSJ Performance of the Year 2018) with Bedlam and Peter Pan also with Bedlam, The Comedy of Errors as part of the Public Theater’s Mobile Shakespeare Unit, and Nora and Delia Ephron’s Love, Loss and What I Wore. Regional theater credits include The 39 Steps at The Actors Theater of Louisville, The Merry Wives of Windsor at Two River Theater and The Nerd at Bucks County Playhouse. Zuzanna is a Master Teacher for YoungArts in Miami. She received a B.A. from Barnard College and an M.F.A. in acting from the A.R.T./MXAT Institute at Harvard.

Veteran Outreach:

Bedlam offers a FREE ongoing acting class for Veterans on Monday evenings dedicated to the exploration of William Shakespeare’s plays. The class is welcome to bring in material of their choice to work on for auditions and performances. Participants are also invited to share their work in showcase presentations, and participate in an ongoing reading series. The class is open to actors of all levels of experience as well as “non-actors.” Veterans only.
