In Romeo and Juliet, two young people fall desperately in love and risk everything for a future together. In Uncle Vanya, a household of frustrated adults confronts the futures they never had, the people they couldn't love, and the years they can never get back.
Bedlam's Uncle Romeo Vanya Juliet brings both plays to life simultaneously, with the same five actors performing Shakespeare and Chekhov in one shared theatrical world. Scenes overlap, characters transform, and the two stories interrupt and illuminate each other. A declaration of eternal love collides with the exhaustion of a failed romance. Youthful certainty meets middle-aged regret. The tragedies of one generation become the absurdities of another.
Directed by Eric Tucker, the production turns two classics into a single theatrical event, revealing the startling similarities between people who believe their lives are just beginning and those who fear their lives have already passed them by.
