THE STORY.

A Black general celebrated for defending a white society that will never fully accept him. A white woman who defies her family to marry him. And a trusted friend who knows exactly how to turn the world's prejudices against them.

Othello has earned extraordinary power and respect in Venice, but his position is precarious. He is admired for his military victories while remaining an outsider in the society he serves. His marriage to Desdemona challenges the racial and social boundaries of that world, provoking outrage from her father and suspicion from those around them. Into this uneasy territory steps Iago, Othello's closest lieutenant, who understands that the most effective lies are the ones that exploit fears already buried deep within us.

With a few carefully planted suggestions, a misplaced handkerchief, and an intimate understanding of Othello's insecurities, Iago turns love into suspicion, suspicion into certainty, and certainty into violence. Othello begins to see himself and his marriage through the eyes of a society that has always regarded him as different.

In Bedlam's Othello, directed by Eric Tucker, four actors play all nineteen characters, transforming Shakespeare's tragedy into an intimate, volatile examination of race, jealousy, manipulation, and the terrifying ease with which trust can be destroyed.

Ryan Quinn's Othello, Eric Tucker's Iago, Susannah Hoffman's Desdemona, and Susannah Millonzi's Emilia form the center of a world that is constantly shifting around them. With no elaborate scenery or concealed transformations, the actors move between characters in full view, changing relationships, allegiances, and identities before the audience's eyes. The same performers who embody Othello's closest allies can become the voices that undermine him. The theatrical doubling exposes the machinery of Iago's deception: how one person can manufacture an entire reality for another.

As the story tightens, the expansive world of generals, soldiers, senators, and servants collapses into a handful of people trapped by their own fears and desires. What begins as a public story about race, power, and belonging becomes a devastatingly private tragedy about the destruction of love.

Stripped to its essentials, Bedlam's Othello asks what happens when we begin to trust the stories we are told about the people we love more than the people themselves.

Four actors. Nineteen characters. One lie that destroys everything.
