THE STORY.
A poor young woman wants to change her life. A wealthy, educated man makes a bet that he can change it for her. Neither understands what they're getting into.
Eliza Doolittle is a flower seller whose accent and working-class background keep her trapped at the bottom of London's social hierarchy. Henry Higgins, a brilliant and insufferably arrogant professor of phonetics, wagers that he can transform her into a lady simply by teaching her how to speak. What begins as an experiment in language becomes a battle over identity, independence, and who gets to decide another person's worth.
In Bedlam's Pygmalion, Eliza is played by Indian actress Vaishnavi Sharma, bringing questions of race, immigration, and cultural assimilation into sharp focus. Her transformation is no longer simply about moving between social classes. It also asks what happens when a woman of color is expected to erase the markers of her identity to be accepted by a society that considers itself superior.
With six actors playing Shaw's world and the audience drawn directly into the action, Bedlam strips away the comfortable Edwardian trappings of the play to expose its continuing relevance. Higgins believes he is creating a new woman. Eliza discovers that becoming someone else may be the only way to claim the right to be herself.
At once fiercely funny and deeply unsettling, Pygmalion becomes a confrontation between privilege and self-determination, between the power to shape another person and the courage to resist being shaped.
